After practicing on Leach for several days and having good practices, we went out on tournament days and experienced a few follies. In the first spot, I managed to hook a fish, fight it for a few seconds, and then end up out of the boat and fully submerged under water. My life preserver went off, sending me to the top of the lake with my hat, glasses and rod, but alas no fish. As you can imagine, a disgruntled fisherman was made...all in the first half hour of the tournament.
We then went on boat two 3 1/2 pound bass and had several fish on that we just couldn't seem to get in the boat. Sometimes tournament bass fishing can throw you lemons and it is hard to make lemonade when you're soaking wet. As always, a major key to fishing is being on your mental game and maintaining a positive attitude. You've got to power through unexpended variables, whether it be the weather, another fisherman, or a dive into the lake, and maintain focus.
We learned a lot about Leach Lake, and we're excited to return in the upcoming years.
