Since I got my boat back last week, I was dying to go fishing this past weekend. I decided to go to Mississippi River Pool 7. The first thing I did before I started fishing was just run my boat. I immediately went on a long run just so I can remember what it felt like again. I then began to fish around. It was a little slow, and I searched for new areas for later in the season. Right now is a good time to look around, since there are lots of spots you can get to easily in high water conditions. We got into some largemouth and a few northerns in the backs of feeder creeks and flats that warm up more rapidly than the channel. Good numbers of largemouth were caught after 12pm. Left my phone/camera in the truck, so no pictures for you today. Swimjigs and worms seemed to do the trick this trip.
Let me give you some advice - the best thing to do for holidays is to take a fishing trip. So over this past Easter, I went to Lake Guntersville in Alabama with my dad. We had a great time fishing and enjoying the warmer weather. We caught bass on roadbeds and rocklines on crankbaits and jigs, and then went into feeder creeks and docks and were catching them on soft plastics. The biggest bass caught was caught by my dad on a crankbait, and was right around 6 lbs. There were a couple of agonizing bass that we lost right at the boat, and those will definitely make for a return trip. We stayed at the State Park right on Lake Guntersville. The accommodations were nice, with the boat launch conveniently located within a mile.
One more unusual sight from Guntersville - a goose up there on the top of a fallen tree. Although my boat was in Texas last month, that didn't stop me from fishing it up. We decided to go to the hot ponds, which is a cooling reservoir for a coal fire electric plant. One of the things we learned when we got to the lake is that it was an electric motor lake. Luckily we had this small boat already, since it's also a lake without a launch. Despite it's small size, this boat does come equipped with a guard dog. We carried the boat down to the water and began fishing. Immediately we missed the big boats, since it was really windy and we were tossed around easily. We made it to the other side of the pond and caught a smallmouth and a big blue gill. Fishing was tough but it was fun to get out for the first time in Wisconsin in 2014.
In the past month I haven't posted too much about fishing because I took my boat in for routine service and found out that my fuel tanks had a factory defect. When we were in Florida, I knew something was up with one of the fuel tanks because the fuel tank appeared to be full on gas, but wouldn't run the motor. I never imagined that the entire fuel tank could be faulty, but there we have it.
The boat was sent in for repair, all the way back to Texas, and I just got it back this past week. The boat seems to be mechanically sound as of now, and both tanks hold fuel and work properly. You betcha I tested that out this weekend. However, during the replacement of my tanks, I had LED strip lighting in the back that was destroyed and a strange dent in my trailer tongue. It looks like it a tracker picked it up by the trailer improperly and dented that way. I'm going to take pictures and write a letter to Skeeter, and I'll keep you posted of the outcome. |
